Three Words That Can Drive Your Success in HR This Year…

By Alan Collins

I want to tell you about one of the most empowering actions you can take this year to advance your career in HR.

I personally take this action every year in January.  But it can be done anytime.

And without exception, when I do it, a huge personal and career transformation occurs for me as a result.

It can happen for YOU as well.

What it involves is this…

Creating an empowering THEME
for yourself.

To be specific, this is a one to three-word theme.   Its purpose is to serve as a powerful personal guiding principle and focus for everything you do for the year.

It’s like a New Year’s resolution…but even better.

Let me clarify this further with an example.

Two years ago, my theme was:
SIMPLIFY THINGS.

With these two simple words as a focus, I spent that year having a blast discovering all kinds of ways to:

One of the best simplifying discoveries I made was fiverr.com.  Fiverr helped me with get my grunt work done faster, better and cheaper.

In fact, I discovered over 16 things I could get done better through fiverr.  You can find many of them that might help you too in my in my article: Overwhelmed With Time-Consuming HR Grunt Work That Drives You Crazy? Try This Instead.

Check it out.

Anyway, that was two years ago.

Now let’s talk about last year…

My theme then was:
BE MORE GENEROUS.
And it will be my theme
again this year.

Here’s why I chose those three words.

First of all, I’ve always been aware of how excited and emotional I get when I watch movies where someone is being kind and generous to someone. My all-time favorite film along these lines is “It’s A Wonderful Life.”  My second fave is “A Walk To Remember.” And no matter how many times I watch them, I tear up.

So, I have always loved random acts of kindness and generosity.  And this past year, I enjoyed doing them even more.

You may have noticed that last year, I started giving away lots of HR career advancement freebies – things I could have charged for.  These were things like one page guides, cheat sheets, special reports and free bonuses.

Here are just a few examples to grab if you don’t already have them:

Monetizing Your HR Expertise (a 25 page special report)

I had a blast creating them and it felt good inside to just share my experiences – with no strings attached at no charge — with my subscribers, for my network and for my clients.

I plan to do even more of that this year.

In addition, I also tried to be more present, more generous and kind when a client, former colleague or friend was experiencing hardships. Or more supportive and encouraging to the people in my network.

All that gave me a tremendous personal and emotional lift this year…and the UNEXPECTED RETURNS I’ve received from these actions  have been immense.  My career and business have never been better.

With all of the things that are off with our world, I think the world needs a little more kindness.

Like I said, it will be my theme again for 2020.

But this year, I’m going to take things the next level.

My goal this year is to spread at least ONE tiny, itty-bitty random act of kindness and generosity every single day. I am going to be more patient and kind to my clients, family, friends, to my colleagues, and strangers I come into contact with. And the toughest one of all – I am going to be generous and kind to myself.

I predict that this theme and this daily practice are going to transform me and my career in ways I can’t even possibly imagine.

Anyway, that’s me – that’s my theme: BEING MORE GENEROUS.

Now, what’s YOURS?
What Are The 1 to 3 Words
That Will Empower or Drive
YOU This Year?

I strongly suggest setting aside some to come up with your own.

For example, it could be things such as:

…Or any one of hundreds of other possibilities or even mine: BE MORE GENEROUS.

Here’s how to come up with your own empowering THEME:

Step #1 — Set aside a couple of hours away from the hustle and bustle of your HR day job and tune into what you really want for yourself this year — and what’s been holding you back. Brainstorm a list of at least 25-50 possibilities. And then ask yourself which ONE on the list would empower you or give you a real breakthrough 365 days from now.

Step #2 — Once you have that ONE theme, share it with the important people in your life as a public declaration of your desire. Then set some specific, actionable and measureable goals against it.

Step #3 — Get a new journal for the coming year (or simply use your phone’s notes page app), put your theme at the top of it and journal how you’re progressing on your theme and your actionable goals at least 3 times per week

Once you follow this practice and start living your theme, I predict your life and HR career will never be the same.

Try it.  It might be one of the best things you’ll ever do for your career.

Wish you much success this year.

Onward!
